A slate roof is more labour intensive than other roof coverings such as tiles, but is one of the most beautiful roofs that can be installed and this traditional roofing material has stood the test of time. The techniques for laying slates and shingles have not changed substantially for many centuries.
This work requires experienced craftsmen and does take longer to install than either terracotta or concrete tiles or metal roofs, but the end result is a aesthetically pleasing roof, of a natural material, which is fire resistant, not susceptable to insects or rot and has a longevity of up to 120 years. Slate tile is often specified by architects or requested by owners due to its visual appeal and heritage character.
